Lucia Ugarte, an undergraduate student seeking a bachelor of arts in English with a concentration in writing studies and minors in both political science and communications media, has been awarded the Ray Coppler Disability Awareness Award for 2024–25.
A passionate advocate for disability awareness and accessibility, Lucia has made a lasting impact on the IUP community through their work as a resident assistant (RA) in Putt Hall and as a student worker at the Disability Access and Advising (D2A2) office. Their efforts during the 2024–25 academic year have gone far beyond expectations, from advocating for physical accessibility improvements to guiding fellow students toward needed accommodations and support. Known for their empathy, initiative, and ability to foster inclusion, Lucia has led programming, raised awareness through educational materials, and empowered others through personal support and advocacy.
Two individuals nominated Lucia for this year’s Coppler Award. The first nominator, an IUP graduate student, wrote:
“....Lucia's dedication to accessibility is evident in their proactive approach. Within the 2024–25 academic year, they have consistently assessed the environment in Putt Hall, seeking out and identifying potential barriers. Specifically, in fall 2024, they identified an issue with the automated door and elevator in the lobby and advocated for its repair.... They have used their knowledge to provide residents with individualized resources and support, including walking students to the D2A2 office or simply getting them the resources needed for them to begin meeting with the D2A2 office.... Lucia's involvement in the "Behind Closed Doors" initiative during the 2024–25 academic year RA Training exemplifies their dedication to promoting awareness and understanding of disability-related issues. This program demonstrates their commitment to developing unique opportunities and experiences for individuals with disabilities by empowering RAs with the tools to be more inclusive.... In spring 2025, they developed and coordinated a disability awareness bulletin board within Putt Hall, focusing on invisible and visible disabilities, which significantly increased understanding among residents.... Lucia’s empathy, initiative, and commitment to inclusivity are truly commendable.”
And Lucia’s second nominator, an IUP undergraduate student, wrote:
“....they do so much for the IUP community, especially for students with disabilities.... They’re one of the most caring and dedicated people I know, and their impact goes way beyond just doing their job. Lucia has helped so many students as well as her residents get the accommodations and support they need, including me. When I was feeling overwhelmed and unsure about what services I could access, Lucia stepped in and helped me set up a meeting to do so. They’ve done the same for so many others, always advocating, always showing up. They don’t just help people with paperwork; they help people feel like they belong. They also are doing amazing in school at the same time. While juggling work, advocacy, and helping others, Lucia still manages to stay on top of their classes and do really well. It’s inspiring how much they care about others while still prioritizing their own goals and education. Lucia also does a lot to raise awareness and educate people on campus about disability, whether it’s through conversations, events, or just being open about their own experiences. They make it easier for people to understand things they might not have thought about before, and they do it in a way that feels real and respectful. They’ve made a big difference in my life, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way. Lucia makes IUP a more accessible, welcoming place....”
